about

The idea for the track ‘The Well’ grew out of Haruki Murakami’s novel ‘The Wind-Up Bird Chronicle’ (1994) in which the novel’s protagonist Toru, newly unemployed and searching for his missing cat, discovers an old, dried up well in an empty yard off an alleyway behind his house. He begins to spend long periods of time sat at the bottom of the well in darkness to think, later having cross-dimensional experiences while searching for his wife, Kumiko.

Themes of absence and haunting, connection and lost connection opened out in the EP and emerged in the songs I was writing for it.

In the ‘The Well’, I began with lines: ‘Down there in the darkness / The division was gone between me and the air that I breathe’ and began improvising the rest of the lyrics. This led to a very rough version of the lyrics which I then refined further. Working in an improvisatory way and leaving parts of these improvisations in the songs allowed more vulnerability into the songs, something which has been a priority for me while producing this EP.

lyrics

Down there in the darkness
the division was gone
between me and the air that I breathe
and I had some time to think for a change
and I saw
I might need you everyday
without you I'm just down there
every day

and I recall a poem
it tells me that I should erase myself
at least that's what I took from it
don't leave me alone

You are my favourite
You are my joy

Started freaking out, seeing things
hearing things in my chest apparitions sent
down there with the broken bones
down there with the broken bones
that I hallucinated
I thought of you

oh, down the well

You are my favourite
you are my joy

and I let you in you
I let you in
like I ain't let no-one in
like I aint let
no-one in

Make space for love
so much space
I make space for love
so much space
